Writing
II

 

Course Objectives:-

Students in this course are first introduced to different writing environments, which are intellectually and academically stimulating, but not beyond students' lexical, grammatical, or syntactic competence. Students will be dealing with carefully selected writing strategies suitable for beginners and advanced level to write sentences, paragraphs, short compositions and new lexical items through variety of exercises and also to promote and introduce them to the writing structure of the essay.

 

Course Content:-

Students will be introduced to a wide range of writing tasks developed to reflect the nature of the written language. These tasks are divided into four major parts within each chapter. There are miner parts that go under the four major parts with its contents vary from one chapter to another. The cover page of each chapter functions as a directory of highlighting the most important features and strategies students about to experience within the chapter.

The first part (Before You Write) deals with exploring, building and then organizing ideas and vocabularies through colorful strategies.

The second part (Developing Writing Skills), where the actual writing starts, teaches developing cohesion and clarity by introducing various grammatical rules and terms, which assist students to build a better composition. Focus on Testing section is included within the second part of each chapter, where few hints of the standard test of English proficiency, TOEFL IBT, are presented to help students build a better ability of how to deal with few of its questions and exercises.

The third part (Revising and Editing) helps revising for content and editing for form to the students' first drafts through variety of different strategies for both revising and editing. Then the students will have the opportunity to evaluate their own writings through Evaluate Your Writing section by using rubrics and finally applying them on writing the second draft.

The fourth part (Expansion Activities) is an expansion of activities, which encourage students to activate their writing skills in different contexts outside the topics of the book.

 

Attainable Skills:-

After dealing with a variety of different exercises in generating ideas and actual writings, students are expected to have built a repertoire of vocabulary, grammar, different writing styles and strategies, which eventually will enable them to practice their writing skills in a cultural and academic environment.

 

Methods of Assessment:-

Besides frequent quizzes & assignments (10 Marks), students will be given two major exams (25+25 Marks) & a final exam (40 Marks). Participation will be taken into consideration. There will be few extra bounce marks for extra optional assignments usually delivered via e-mail. Students who exceed the limit of absence (25%) will automatically be denied and they will have the permission to continue attending classes, but will NOT be allowed to enter the final examination room.
