Listening and Speaking II

 

Course Objectives:-

 

This course is intended to give students the opportunity to practice speaking and listening skills and develop fluency in English. It also aims at encouraging the use of specific grammatical structures, promoting fluency and improving communication skills.

 

Course Content:-

 

Students will be introduced to a wide range of listening tasks developed to reflect the nature of the spoken language. These tasks are divided into four parts within each chapter. The cover page of each chapter gives students a preview of the content and the focus of the chapter. Cultural Notes offers factual information about the topic of the chapter. The first part (Conversation) presents a conversation among native speakers with providing different variety of exercises before and after the listening task. The second part (Lectures) is the core of the chapter where a relatively long lecture is given and different note-taking strategies are offered. The third part (Strategies for Better Listening and Speaking) offers specific situations where students have to pay close attention to the context of the listening tasks and try to practice the different suggestions of using the spoken language with few activities on the TOEFL iBT. The fourth part (Real World Task) is an expansion of activities which encourages students to activate their listening and speaking skills in different contexts

 

Attainable Skills:-

 

Students will be able to understand and comprehend long lectures and more focused conversations. They will also develop different note-taking strategies which will enhance their competence ability, as students, to overcome the problem of understanding and interacting with academic lectures.

 

Methods of Assessment:-

 

Besides frequent quizzes & assignments (10 Marks), students will be given two major exams (25+25 Marks) & a final exam (40 Marks). Participation will be taken into consideration. There will be few extra bounce marks for extra optional assignments usually delivered via e-mail. Students who exceed the limit of absence (25%) will automatically be denied and they will have the permission to continue attending classes, but will NOT be allowed to enter the final examination room.
