Course Objectives:-

 

The reading selections in this course aim at presenting beginner college-level reading material, grammar and vocabulary to enhance the students' level of comprehension. They also aim at guiding students toward acquiring the skills of good readers; skills that make reading both easy and enjoyable. It is also intended through many vocabulary-building exercises, to emphasize much more Reading I strategies such as skimming for the main ideas, answering with details, guessing meaning from context, summarizing, understanding the structure and organization of a reading selection, and increasing reading speed.

 

Course Content:-

 

Students will be introduced to a wide range of reading tasks developed to reflect the nature of the reading language. These tasks are divided into four major parts within each chapter. The fist part (The 1st Reading Selection) starts with discussing pictures and providing questions to think about while reading. The next exercise Read, where the actual reading starts, follows with various exercises to ensure full understating of the content of the reading task. The second part (The 2nd Reading Selection) prepares students for standardized tests through recognizing topic sentences, creating titles, summarizing and outlining the main ideas and the supporting details. The third part (Vocabulary and Language Learning Skills) deals with learning vocabulary skills through synonyms, antonyms, context clues and word families. The forth part (Personal Stories and Humor) connects the classroom to real life readings through ads, application forms, brochures and other realia.

 

Attainable Skills:-

 

Students will be able to recognize different reading strategies with the ability to link ideas and words in context. They will also be familiar with simple text structure, understating different details and building their vocabulary stocks.

 

Methods of Assessment:-

 

Besides frequent quizzes & assignments (20 Marks), students will be given two major exams (20+20 Marks) & a final exam (40 Marks). Participation will be taken into consideration. There will be few extra bounce marks for extra optional assignments usually delivered via e-mail. Students who exceed the limit of absence (25%) will automatically be denied and will NOT be allowed to enter the final examination room.
